Local Barns Needed

Friends o fMinnesota Barns 2010 promo Barn.jpg

For the third year, Friends of Minnesota Barns (FoMB) is seeking local barn owners to enter their barn into FoMB’s 2010 Barn of the Year Award contest. The award program will recognize barn owners who have made efforts to preserve their barn and help to provide examples and ideas for other owners with problem barns. The entries will be divided into categories: FARM USE and NONFARM USE. The entries will be judged on historical significance, preservation efforts, preservation creativity, and perceived future of the barn.

Download the 2010 Barn of the Year Award Nomination Formhere. The completed entry nomination must be returned by September 15, 2010. An awards ceremony will be part of the group’s annual HarvestFest to be held on November 13th. The winner of each category will receive a plaque of preservation recognition, $200.00 cash, an annual membership to FoMB, and recognition in our newsletter and on our website. Honorable Mentions Award winners for each category will receive complimentary memberships to FoMB. In addition, every qualified entry will receive a small gift for entering. Last year, that gift was a collectors magnet. Read the complete
Contest Details here.

Last year, which was the second year of the contest, entries came from 36 Minnesota counties. This year FoMB has the goal to have statewide coverage, with hopefully at least one entry from every county in the state of MN. FoMB is a non-profit organization that actively supports efforts to keep traditional barns and other historic farm buildings part of Minnesota’s rural landscape.

Mission

Our mission is to educate the public and raise awareness to the importance of historic barns and farmsteads in Minnesota, and to help advocate for barn preservation. We offer educational workshops and assist others in finding resources for preservation and/or restoration of historic barns and farmsteads.

Friends of Minnesota Barns is a Minnesota-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Formerly operating as a barn preservation program under the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS), and as a result of 2003 state budget cuts, a group of citizens volunteered on Saturday, October 11, 2003 to establish a new organization. An initial steering committee was formed to develop an organization and mission to continue the work started by MHS. In March of 2004, a general membership meeting was held in Chisago City to ratify our charter and bylaws to operate as a newly formed organization.

We currently operate with an all volunteer staff of nine Steering Committee members, and are solely supported by membership dues. Annual membership dues are $25 Individual, $35 Family, or $50 Organization. Dues may be paid by mail or online, using our secure PayPal cart.
